Heatherwood Fete Day Memories
The league of friends fete's were the main stay of fundraising throughout the 1960's 70's and 80's. Each year the fete committee would try and secure the services of a celebrity to open the fete. In the 1960's, records show appearance by John Junkin, and for 1979;Howard Lang. There were a number of other's, but records of those have been lost.
In the 1980's the annual fete's continued as fund raiser's with celebrity guests still being enticed to attend. Tom O'Connor, Rex Hunt,( Governor Falkland Islands ) Nanette Newman and Kenneth Kendall and Iris Williams all appeared at Heatherwood. Here is a snapshot of those happy days.
Each year the organisation of the fete would generate an immense amount of work for the league secretary. The income from the fetes dwindled and for the amount of effort which was required it was decided by the league to call it a day.
The last fete was organised by former Secretary Pat Bidgood in 1990. The lack of support from volunteers and members of the public sealed the end of the fete as a form of fundraising.
Below some pictures which exist of happier times:-
