Heatherwood Hospital 1922-2023

Heatherwood Staff Laundry 1983-2019

Staff Laundry

The league of friends funded and created a staff laundry with washing machines and driers in what was then the nurses quarter in Heatherwood House. This was back in 1983 we believe. No photo's exist of the original laundry.

A small nominal fee was charged to use the machines, this was to cover costs and monies made from the use of the machines, would be ploughed back into gifts for the hospital.

The laundry service since 1983 provided a steady income for the league and this money which runs into thousands, was used on many different projects.

The money in the machines was collected by the staff of the cash office in admin and they would pass it to the league. Any problems with the machines would also be brought to the attention of the league treasurer.

In 2007 the laundry moved to the new Ruby Brook housing development, as the accommodation in Heatherwood House was to be demolished.

During the period from 2007 to 2019 the league Treasurer took on the role of collecting the cash, it was also necessary to clean the laundry every other week.

On the first of April 2019 the laundry was cleared of it's machines and the room handed back to the housing association. The closure of the laundry run by the league of friends is part of the winding up of the charity.
